Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso is running in the Democratic primary for New York’s 7th congressional district to succeed the trailblazing congresswoman Nydia Velázquez. She and the Working Families Party endorsed him to fill the seat.
But back in March, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced his endorsement of another candidate, Assemblywoman Claire Valdez. A labor organizer, Valdez also has endorsements from the chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.
Some have said that this race is a proxy fight for the future of New York progressive politics—a battle between the WFP and the DSA that will decide who has stronger movement chops. But others, like Reynoso, dispute that characterization.
